How to Motivate Your Student to Study

As your child gets older, they will have to learn how to take on more responsibility. They will have to learn how to get their homework done and they will also need to be able to rely on other students for support. How can you motivate your student to study?

As a parent, it is vital that you have an active role to play when it comes to your child’s studying, but at the same time, you should be trying to avoid forcing them to do it. If you do force them, then you may find that you end up demotivating them and this is the last thing you want.

Find out What is Stopping Them

Your child might not be motivated to study for a huge number of reasons. You need to find the reason why if you truly want to help them. It may be that they are finding it hard to concentrate, or that the work they are doing is not actually challenging enough. They may also have anxiety about college, or they may not be confident in their own abilities. Either way, if you can focus on things like this, then you will be able to make it easier on yourself and on your child.

Make it Easier

You have to make study time as easy as possible for your child. You can do this by giving them everything they need to get the work done. This could include a quiet space, that is free from distractions. If your child is hungry then this will make it difficult for them to focus on work, so give them a nice and light snack before they are due to study. Ensuring that your child has everything they need will help them, and it will also give them the chance to stay focused more.

Create a Study Plan

Children tend to do very well when they have structure. If you can make sure that they have a good study plan in place, then this will give them the motivation they need to keep going. Try and have a plan for each night and keep your child involved too. If you can do this then you will be able to help them more than you realize, not to mention that they will also be much more likely to stick to the plan. Creating a system based on challenges and rewards will help too. Check out this page from Heidi Schave on Kaggle to see how you could enter your child into competitions.

Limit Stress

If your child is super stressed, then they may find it very difficult to study. You may even find that it is difficult for them to get the motivation needed to get started. If you can help your child to relieve the stress that they experience by simply spending time with them and by encouraging them, then you will soon see that this works wonders for them and you, so keep that in mind when you want to support them in every way possible.
