Key Things Seniors Must Do Before Graduation

As graduation draws near, your senior is almost at the finish line—but a few final tasks still need your attention. Helping your teen wrap up their college plans now can prevent headaches later. Here’s your parent-friendly checklist of what to tackle this spring.

1. Finalize the College Decision

Support your student as they compare financial aid offers and consider how each campus feels in terms of community, academics, and future opportunities. Encourage them to reach out to current students or attend a virtual event to help with their final decision.

Parent Tip: Use a spreadsheet to track cost, location, graduation rate, job outcomes, and gut feelings.

2. Submit the Enrollment Deposit

Make sure your student officially accepts their college offer by the May 1 deadline. Assist with submitting the deposit and completing any required housing or orientation applications.

Parent Tip: Double-check your student’s college email for important updates.

3. Review Financial Aid and Scholarships

Before your student commits, ensure all required documents for FAFSA or the CSS Profile have been submitted. Help them log into the college portal to accept or decline aid and clarify any final financial aid details.

Parent Tip: Create a calendar of scholarship and loan deadlines. Call the financial aid office with any final questions.

4. Request Final Transcripts

Your student needs to notify their high school counselor of their college choice so that the final transcript, including final grades and graduation status, can be sent in a timely manner.

Parent Tip: Set a reminder so this gets done before school closes for summer.

5. Celebrate and Express Gratitude

Encourage your teen to take the time to thank the people who supported them through their high school journey. A thoughtful note to teachers, counselors, and mentors can go a long way.

Parent Tip: Help organize a small appreciation gift or heartfelt note for people who supported them.
