How to Make the Most of Spring College Fairs and Info Sessions

college fairs

Spring is full of opportunities to connect with colleges through college fairs and virtual events. These events can open new doors, but preparation is key. Here’s how to help your student navigate college fairs and make lasting impressions.

Research Ahead of Time

Before attending a fair, your student should identify which schools they want to connect with and review basic facts like majors, size, and location. This will help them ask more meaningful questions.

Parent Tip: Narrow the list to 5–7 schools. Print a map or create a plan for virtual booths.

Prepare Good Questions

Help your teen think of 3–5 thoughtful questions that go beyond what’s on the website. These could focus on academic programs, student life, or unique opportunities like study abroad.

Parent Tip: Help your student come up with 3–5 go-to questions and jot them down.

Engage During the Fair

Encourage your student to dress neatly, introduce themselves with confidence, and ask for brochures or business cards. Taking notes during conversations will help them remember important details.

Parent Tip: Practice a simple introduction at home. Encourage eye contact and note-taking.

Collect and Organize Information

After the fair, help your teen organize the materials they collected and jot down what stood out about each school. This will be useful when comparing colleges later.

Parent Tip: Use a shared folder (digital or physical) to store and sort everything.

Follow Up with Schools

Have your student send a quick thank-you email to any admissions reps they spoke with, mentioning something specific from the conversation. This helps them stay memorable and helps your student show demonstrated interest. Colleges keep track of students who show interest and use it when determining offers of admission.

Parent Tip: Help review the message for tone and accuracy.
